Full peal to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
Our bell ringers will ring a full peal to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Our bell ringers will ring a full peal to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Rochester Cathedral’s bells will join other Church of England churches joining the Ring Out for Climate initiative. Churches across the country are planning to ring their bells on the eve of COP26, the meeting of leaders to discuss climate change. The bells will toll from 6pm on the 30th October.
The Rochester Cathedral bell ringers will be ringing a peal on Friday 27th December. This is to celebrate Christmas and the Feast of St John.
A full peal is being attempted today by a visiting team of bellringers. A full peal requires over 5000 different changes (or combinations of the order of bells) to be rung without a break and, if successful, will take in the order of 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete.
Rochester Cathedral has 10 bells, cast in 1921 by Gillett and Johnston. They are tuned to D major and the tenor (the heaviest bell) weighs 30-0-14cwt (1500kg approx).
