Challenge 11 - Important People
In the nave, below the organ, you will find an amazing timeline of people important to our Cathedral’s story. From the left hand side they are:
St Andrew – The Cathedral was originally dedicated to (named after) him.
King Ethelbert – The first Anglo Saxon King to be baptised. He gave land for our Cathedral to be built on.
Justus - Rochester’s first bishop
Paulinus – Another of our Anglo Saxon bishops. He rescued a princess!
Then on the other side of the middle arch:
Gundulf – The norman bishop who rebuilt the Cathedral.
William of Hoo – a thirteenth century monk who oversaw the rebuilding of the Cathedral after fires damagaed it.
Walter de Merton – Bishop of Rochester and Chancellor of England. He also founded Merton College at Oxford. His tomb can be found in the north quire transept.
John Fisher – Bishop here at the time of the Reformation. He lost his life because he disagreed with Henry VIII.
For this challenge we’d like you to create your own timeline of people who are important in your life story – friends, family, teachers, authors…anyone who has had a positive influence on you. Download the template and fill each of the arches with a drawing or photograph of the important people in your life.
