Challenge 12 - Kings and Queens
In 595 Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine and a small band of monks to the Anglo Saxon kingdom of Kent to convert the nation to Christianity.
Ethelbert was King of Kent; his wife Bertha was already a Christian. Bertha persuaded her husband to listen to Augustine. Ethelbert was converted and was baptised in Canterbury in 597. He gave land for England’s first Cathedral to be built.
In 604 Ethelbert gave land for another Cathedral to be built, this time in Rochester, making it England’s second oldest.
Ethelbert and Bertha are important people in the life story of our Cathedral.
The story of the arrival of Christianity in Anglo Saxon Kent and the building of Rochester Cathedral is told in our magnificent fresco.
For this challenge we’d like you to make a crown.
Design and decorate it as you wish – be as creative as you can.
Why not give your crown as a present to someone important in your life?
