Challenge 9 - Let’s Make Music

Music is an essential part of worship. St Augustine of Hippo said, “He who sings, prays twice”. Rochester Cathedral has a long history of music linked to our choirs and our magnificent and mighty organ.

The organ is a wind instrument and has around 3,808 pipes some huge, and some tiny. To find out more about the organ you can download our Awesome Organ sheet or visit the Music section of the Cathedral website

For this challenge we’d like you to make a musical instrument, not from the wind family like the organ, but a percussion instrument – a shaker in the shape of one of our organ pipes.

You will need

  • A tube e.g. an empty snack crisp tube or the cardboard tube from kitchen roll

  • Dried lentils, uncooked rice, dried peas or similar

  • Sticky tape

  • Glue (optional)

  • Paper

  • Pens, pencils, crayons or paint to decorate

Method

  • Cover one end of the tube with a small piece of paper. Stick firmly in place with sticky tape (If you are using an empty snack crisp tube you won’t need to do this).

  • Fill the tube with your chosen dried ingredients.

  • Cover the top of the tube with another piece of paper / the crisp tube lid. Stick firmly in place with sticky tape.

  • Wrap a plain piece of paper around the tube. Use the glue or tape to hold it in place.

  • Decorate your shaker. You might want to take inspiration from the patterns on our organ pipes.
