Cathedral garden project receives grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund

A project to transform parts of Rochester Cathedral’s secret gardens into a wellbeing space is underway thanks to a grant from the UK Share Prosperity Fund.

Rochester Cathedral has been working to transform the Cathedral gardens, which have existed since the 7th century and are a vital “green lung” in the heart of Rochester’s historic city centre.

Part of the project aims to transform this ancient space into accessible community areas, focusing on mental and physical wellbeing. A key feature will be the creation of an enclosed Community Sensory Garden, designed to cater to individuals living with dementia, autism, or PTSD, particularly from the military veteran community. This safe space will allow those who benefit from engagement with nature to do so in a controlled environment.

To ensure inclusivity, the project will also address accessibility issues. A £5,000 grant from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will finance a feasibility study for an accessible entrance to the new garden. This study will explore design options and associated costs, paving the way for increased engagement opportunities for those with mobility challenges.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK by investing in communities and places, supporting local businesses, and enhancing skills.
