It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and our most sincere condolences, on behalf of the Diocese of Rochester, have been expressed to Her Majesty The Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Memorial services

On Sunday 11 April, the Dean presided at a Eucharist at Rochester Cathedral commemorating His Late Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh - the Bishop of Rochester spoke before the service and gave the blessing. The Canon Chancellor’s sermon can be read here.

A Commemorative Evensong (attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent and invited guests) has also been arranged for 5.30pm on Thursday 22 April at which the Bishop of Rochester will preach, to reflect on Prince Philip’s life of dedicated service. Due to current restrictions this service will be for invited ticketed holders only but will also be live-streamed.

We understand people may wish to visit the Cathedral to pray during this time. We have limited opening times but are now open for individual private prayer and some services. More information about our opening times can be found here

Books of Condolence

During the current public health situation, and in line with the wishes of the Royal Family, we will not have a physical Book of Condolence in the Cathedral. We encourage mourners to use online books to leave their messages.
