Our Cathedral’s story begins earlier than you might think. Explore the deep history and archaeology behind the cathedral and medieval priory in our new exhibition in the Cathedral Crypt. Consider the big picture on events and processes that have influenced life at the site over the last 1,400 year.
When Bishop Justus founded Rochester Cathedral in 604 AD to convert the peoples of west Kent, a Roman basilica model was chosen as a manifestation of continuity with the civic systems of the Roman Empire (find out more in Saxon stones?). But the worshippers, clergy, monks and pilgrims to come saw themselves as part of a lineage extending back to Adam and Eve.
The cathedral was rebuilt over many centuries with stones, materials and designs from across Europe and beyond, with the handing down of the scripture and the celebration of the sacraments that Christ established one of the few enduring constants, although not without occasionally violent interruption.
In addition to Textus, Big History explores the socioeconomic network of tithes and customs that sprawled across the expansive medieval Diocese of Rochester.
Scientific and academic investigation can help us understand the cathedral today, how it has evolved over time, and what this can tell us about the millions who have been to this place.
