About the Kent Police Male Voice Choir
The choir was formed in March 1978 when some very young (and some not so young) serving officers and civilian staff members met at police headquarters to form the Kent Police Male Voice Choir. Today some eight founder members still sing with the choir - see if you can spot them at one of our concerts!
Our Musical Directors over the years have given valuable guidance and encouragement to enable the choir to have the confidence and courage to perform in public. Under the batons of Gerry Hughes and David Vening and more recently Martin Rendle we have been fortunate to benefit from their own musical talents enabling us to become the choir we are today.
Of course, male voice choirs rarely exist without an accompanist; the choir has been fortunate to join forces with four excellent pianoforte aficionados: Heather Baker, Wendy Heaton, Ann Parnham and presently Karen Barton-Holman.
The KPMVC became a registered charity a few years ago and is proud to be able to support Kent’s good causes and charities through the provision of concerts and an ability to ‘showcase’ emerging new talent during concerts. Since our inception we have managed to raise almost £400,000 for those good causes.
Most choirs enjoy concert tours and the KPMVC is no different - over the years we have travelled on a number of occasions to Wales, Cornwall, Suffolk, Sussex and mainland Europe. We have visited Germany as guests of the towns of Kobern-Gondorf, Saarbrücken, Monschau, Waltrop (twinned with Herne Bay), Sonsbeck (twinned with Sandwich) and Bad Münstereifel (twinned with Ashford). Visits with our wives and partners have also been made to Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and on three occasions taking part in the ‘Last Post’ ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium. Of course, our forte is performing concerts in and around our home county of Kent; since 1978 we have performed at approaching 500 concerts and have held over 1,920 rehearsals - quite some feat.
2018 was the choir’s 40th anniversary and we have been proud to be ambassadors of Kent Police throughout those years.
Jools Holland OBE DL, a man of considerable good taste! - consented to give the choir his patronage in 2014 - and as a Kentish man obviously knows a good sound when he hears it!
The choir is open to serving and retired police officers, civilian staff and also members of the community. The choir, which today numbers over 50 singers, rehearses weekly at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Parkwood, Maidstone. Members meet at 7.15 p.m. on Thursday evenings and rehearsals conclude at 9.30 p.m. Please contact us through these pages for information about joining the choir, you can be assured of a very warm welcome.
