The Sixteen – Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610

  • Rochester Cathedral (map)

Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610

The Sixteen performs one of the cornerstones of the classical repertoire, Monteverdi's monumental Vespers of 1610, famed for its thrilling rhythms, grand choruses and beautiful solo movements.

The Sixteen choir and orchestra

Harry Christophers conductor

 Soloists:

Katy Hill, Charlotte Mobbs soprano

Jeremy Budd, Mark Dobell tenor

Ben Davies, Eamonn Dougan bass

Harry Christophers says 'the Vespers is one of the most significant collections of sacred music ever written. We will follow Monteverdi's dictum recitar cantando - speak through singing - to maximum effect, bringing this glorious work to life in the wonderful acoustics of some of the UK's finest cathedrals’.

We are delighted that choristers from many of the cathedrals on the tour will have the opportunity to join The Sixteen on stage to perform the ‘Sonata sopra Sancta Maria’ section of the Vespers.
