Ledgerstones

Rochester Cathedral has one of the finest collections of ledger stones in the country. Ledgers are horizontal gravestones sitting atop brick burial vaults containing the remains of wealthy, prominent and influential individuals, couples and families from the cathedral community. They mostly date from the 17th to the 19th centuries and some of the vaults were used over several generations.

A ground-penetrating radar survey was conducted inside the cathedral in 2018, confirming that most of the ledgers remained in place over their burial vaults.
