Rochester Cathedral undergoes work to improve lighting
Rochester Cathedral has begun a programme of work for much needed repairs and updates to the lighting system. The works will go on until Spring 2022.
Our 2018 Quinquennial Inspection highlighted that the electrical installations within the Cathedral had not been significantly upgraded in many years.
Some work was completed in the Crypt as part of the Hidden Treasure Fresh Expressions project but the lighting within the body of the Cathedral is currently not up to standard with many fittings needing regular repairs. Many are very old and the parts required are becoming increasingly difficult to repair and replace.
Over the last two years a new lighting scheme has been developed which will offer far better lighting levels around the Cathedral and also reduce our carbon footprint. The Friends of Rochester Cathedral have very generously pledged £500k towards the cost of the new lighting scheme and the Cathedral Trust has also made a significant contribution.
Work was started by our Project designers and contractors CES Ltd on the 4th October and should be completed by Spring 2022.
