Lighting project at Rochester Cathedral showcased
Rochester Cathedral has finished a programme of work for much needed repairs and updates to the lighting system.
The results speak for themselves. The new lighting system highlights our stunning architecture bringing the Cathedral to life.
Our 2018 Quinquennial Inspection highlighted that the electrical installations within the Cathedral had not been significantly upgraded in many years.
Some work was completed in the Crypt as part of the Hidden Treasure Fresh Expressions project but the lighting within the body of the Cathedral was not up to standard with many fittings needing regular repairs. Many were very old and the parts required are becoming increasingly difficult to repair and replace.
Over the last two years a new lighting scheme has been developed which will offer far better lighting levels around the Cathedral and also reduce our carbon footprint. The Friends of Rochester Cathedral generously pledged £500k towards the cost of the new lighting scheme and the Cathedral Trust has also made a significant contribution.
Work was started by our Project designers and contractors CES Ltd on the 4th October and was mainly completed in Spring 2022. The showcase event took place in February 2023.
